Abstract

560,047. Spring frames for cycles. DOWTY, G. H. Jan. 17, 1939, Nos. 1611, 5628, 17773 and 17774. [Class 136 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIII] Comprises a vehicle or aircraft suspension system in which at least some part of'the resilient action is provided by a shock-absorber comprising a pressure-tight chamber 7, Fig. 1, a plunger 9 slidably extending into the chamber to afford resilientresistance due to the elastic restoring forces of liquid filling the chamber and compressible by plunger movement under load, a head 12 fixed on the plunger and slidable within the chamber, and flow resistance means, such as ashuttle valve 16, included entirely within the headed plunger and movable therewith to afford energy dissipation by passage of liquid therethrough during plunger movement, The shock-absorber per se forms the subject of Specification 560,048, [Group XXXII]. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, a motor cycle frame comprises members 61, 62 joined by vertical members 63, 64, and the rear wheel 66 is carried by radius rods 65 controlled by a shock-absorber 67 with a differential plunger. According to the first Provisional Specification the chamber 7 may contain or be lined with rubber or the like, it may be reinforced by wire wrapping, and a series of shock-absorbers may be used, the chamber of one forming the plunger of the next.
