Abstract

377,900. Spring suspensions; hydraulic shock-absorbers. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES., Untert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Jan. 26, 1932, No. 2342. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1931. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii).] In vehicles in which helical suspension springs 5, Fig. 2, and shock absorbers 8 operated by a connection 9 to the axle 3 are provided, the springs are unguided other than by rigid connections between their ends and the axle and frame, and the shock absorber exerts a variable damping force the value of which is zero for upward movements of the axle in the normal position of rest. The axle 3 of each wheel may be pivoted independently to the frame of the vehicle. The hydraulic shock absorber shown in Figs. 4, 4a, 4b, comprises a vertical cylinder 10 with a piston 12, the underside of which is connected through oppositely acting one-way valves 16, 18, with a reservoir formed by the upper part of the casing. When the piston descends, flow of liquid through the passage 20 depends upon the width of the slot 19, 19a in the wall of the piston. Similarly during the upward movement, the rate of flow into the space below the piston depends upon the extent to which the port 22 is uncovered by the slot 21a in the side of the piston.
