Purifying processes; materials for purifying. -A process for the removal of sulphur compounds, particularly carbon bisulphide, from gas consists in heating the gas to a temperature between 80‹ and 200‹ C. in the presence of water and a substance capable of absorbing sulphuretted hydrogen, for example iron oxide. This process is used after the usual purification with iron oxide; but if air be mixed with the gas for treatment with the hot oxide, the whole of the sulphur both as sulphuretted hydrogen and carbon bisulphide may be removed in one operation. It is advisable in the latter case to wash the gas, leaving the purifier in some alkaline solution. The gas entering the purifier may be heated by the heat of the gases leaving the purifier in a heat-exchange device, and two hot purifiers used alternately may be employed.
