Abstract

18,536. Bullock, A. R. Aug. 12. Electric tanning.-Solid or substantially solid substances are impregnated with a liquid or plastic mass of impregnating-substance by the action upon the substances of a magnetic field which changes density, preferably with great rapidity. The process is applicable, for example, to the preserving or curing of meat, hides, or other forms of animal or vegetable matter, and to the tanning of hides. The impregnating- tank is provided with racks 5 for the substance to be impregnated, and with a shoot 1 of wood or other non-conducting material containing a core of magnetically-permeable material wound with an electric conductor 2, which is supplied with an alternating or pulsating direct current preferably of high frequency. A cooling-coil 7 having an insulated section X may be provided. In a modification, the shoot 1 is mounted on the exterior of the tank.
