Abstract

18,022. Escott, A. E., and Escott, H. A. Aug. 3. [Cognate Application, 21,742/12.] F i x e d - abutment type; packing drums, vanes, etc.; working- fluid supply.-A rotor carries one or more pairs of outwardlysliding vanes with a pocket between each pair, the rear vane compressing the charge into the pocket which conveys it past the concentric part of the casing to the point where it is ignited to propel the forward vane. Pockets b, b<1> are formed in a rotor a between the outwardly-sliding vanes c, d, c<1>, d'. The casing f comprises an eccentric compression chamber h connected by concentric surfaces with an eccentric combustion chamber g of narrower width than the chamber h. The vanes d, d<1>, which are of the full width of the chamber h, compress the charge admitted by a port i into the pockets b, b<1>, which convey the charge to the sparking-plug l, and the impact of the explosion is received by the vanes c, c<1>, which are adapted to extend into the narrow chamber g, exhaust taking place through a port k. Air for cooling or scavenging may be supplied to the inlet port at intervals by a suitable valve. The casing may be fitted with spring-pressed roller packing m, and the vanes may have packing-strips p, Fig. 4, pressed apart by a spring r. In a modification, both eccentric chambers are of the same width, and the vanes, which are also of the same width, are controlled in their radial motion by cam grooves in the end covers of the casing. The first Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the vane travelling in front of each pocket is dispensed with, the pocket itself providing the impact surface.
