Electric marking-action. - In electric and other measuring - instruments provided with a pointer moving over a scale, a record is obtained by causing a discharge from an induction coil to pass through the record-strip a between the end g of the pointer and a circular pointed ridge h, Fig. 5. A periodic discharge is obtained by the inclusion in the circuit of a time-operated switch q, and the heat of the spark may be adjusted by the provision of a variable resistance z in the primary of the induction coil v or by a variable spark-gap w in the secondary. The record-strip may be rendered non-inflammable by impregnation with sodium silicate. In a modification, the main part A of the pointer is constructed of non-conducting material and a second discharge point E is formed on the pointer, a corresponding ridge D being carried by a plate C mounted above the record-strip. A mercury commutator may be included in the circuit to obtain simultaneous records. Specifications 7902/90, 21,367/95, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], and 2518/00 are referred to.
