Abstract

17,384. Watson, C. S. July 26. Separators for gaseous substances. - The fluid laden with particles is subjected to abrupt changes of direction and to centrifugal force to cause separation of the particles. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a rotary shaft f carrying plates m and dished plates j, k arranged to leave narrow peripheral outlets n. The plates m, j are partly perforated as shown so that the gas pursues a zigzag path through the device. The plates m, g are blades o which cause the gas to rotate. The gas is introduced at e through a funnel p into the rotor, and the clean gas ultimately escapes at d, the dust being thrown through t h e openings n into the casing a, whence it is removed by a door or doors s. Leakage-preventing flanges p<1> or p<2> are provided on the funnel. Additional baffles w may be arranged in the rotor. When hot gases are to be treated, the bearings h, i may be water-cooled. The gas may be introduced into the casing at x. The apparatus may be arranged horizontally and may be otherwise modified.
