Abstract

1408418 Centrifugal separator J THORDARSON 22 Nov 1972 [22 Nov 1971 17 Nov 1972] 53887/72 Headings B1R and B2P An apparatus for removing solid and/or liquid particles or gaseous components from gases comprises a duct 2, Fig. 1, for the flow of a gas to be cleaned, a rotary or oscillatory separating device of circular cross-section mounted in the duct and including a central hub 12, a rim 14 located in a gap in the wall of the duct with clearance spacings 19, and an array of elongate rods 7 extending radially through the whole or part of the annular space between the hub and the rim, and a collection container 16 surrounding the separating device 8. The arrangement is such that in operation, liquid particles, originally present in the gas to be cleaned, or added thereto by means of one or more atomizers 3, 22 through or in the vicinity of the hub 12 and/or in the duct upstream of the separating device 8, collect on the rods to form films thereon which through absorption or adsorption remove the solid and/or liquid particles or gaseous components from the gas and are flung out by centrifugal force through the clearance spacings 19 into the container 16. A fan 4 may be installed in the duct for inducing the flow of gas. Stationary flow stabilising vanes 18 are mounted on a column 9 upstream of the separating device between the wall of the duct and a central boss which supports a motor 10 for driving the device. The motor may be placed outside the duot and transmits power through gearing or through a V-belt, chain, hydraulic or pneumatic drive. The rim may be Z-shaped (as shown) or channel-shaped with a convex or concave configuration in cross-section. It may be provided with perforations for facilitating the escape of the films of liquid into the container 16. The latter may be equipped with a gas-liquid trap 21. The different parts of the apparatus may be made of stainless steel, nylon, P.V.C. or P.T.F.E. The liquid sprayed through the atomizers may be water, with or without surface active, emulsifying or dispersing agents or an agent influencing the pH faotor, a hydrocarbon such as oil, or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. The rods may have different cross-sectional shapes, e.g. channel shaped of V or U cross-section, or they may be of strip form, the strip, if desired, being twisted. In a modification, two separating devices are arranged axially in series and are adapted to rotate in opposite directions. In Fig. 3, the separating device consists of two main portions 8 and 8A which rotate in opposite directions to each other. The portion 8 comprises a motor 10 centrally mounted in stationary vanes 18 and driving a central hub 12 having hub plates 17 carrying rods 7 and held together by bolts 11 and distance pieces which also hold together obstructing hub plates 17' which serve to prevent gaseous streams from passing through the hub. The portion 8A comprises a motor 10A centrally supported by vanes 18A and driving a hub 12A. The latter carries a spider 13 and a carrier ring 15 which supports a rim 14 made up of a number of elements carrying rods 7A. These rods alternate with the rods 7 and may be stiffened at their inner ends by reinforcing rings 7AR. The rim 14 may be provided with perforations 20. Liquid atomisers are shown at 3 and 22. The zone 23 may serve as a drying zone or it may be supplied with another liquid, e.g. for removing gaseous contaminants, when for instance other particles have been removed by water in the upstream zone(s). The zone 23 may be provided with channels for separate supply of liquid to each of the rods, in which case a different liquid may be supplied to each rod or set of rods.
