Abstract

1488500 Centrifugal filter, centrifugal separators AERCOLOGY INC 5 Dec 1974 52732/74 Headings BIT and B2P [Also in Divisions F1 and F4] A filter for removing solid and liquid particles from an air stream comprises a cylindrical housing 10 with an inlet 14, enclosing a rotatable perforate drum 8 having an inlet 16 defined by an end flange 17, 18, a circumferential slot 31 defined between annular flange 7 and reduced end 6 of the housing enabling liquid coalesced by outward passage through the drum to flow into annular chamber 28, from which liquid leaves by outlet 27 while the air passes through vents 29 into outlet chamber 2 and through outlet 35. The main air stream enters chamber 2 radially inwards of flange 7 through a gap which is shown bridged by a secondary filter medium 4. Vents 29 by-pass medium 4 and extend into chamber 28 where their ends are shaped to exclude liquid. The drum may be lined with a primary filter medium 20, possibly comprising two layers of different pore size. The housing may be mounted in various positions on a foot 25 enabling wall or ceiling mounting with the drum axis vertical or horizontal. The drum is shown mounted directly on the shaft of electric motor 32, but a hydraulic motor and a belt or gear drive could be employed. Paper, polyester and stainless steel mesh are suitable as filter medium 20. Housing cover 15 is removable to allow medium 20 to be replaced. Axial blades 13 assist gas flow outwards through the drum and may support medium 20. Outlet 35 may deliver air to an electrostatic precipitator.
