Abstract

17,234. Matthews, F. E., Bliss, J. H. W., and Elder, H. M. July 24. Unsaturated hydrocarbons are obtained by treating mono- or dihalogen substituted hydrocarbons with water or steam at a high temperature, and with or without the use of catalysts. When heating a mixture of amylene chlorides and water in a sealed tube to 200‹ C., a portion of the hydrocarbon formed is polymerized. Hexylchloride and 2:3-dichlorbutane are also suitable for treatment. According to the Provisional Specification, the halides may also be treated with ammonia, with salts such as borates or phosphates, with lead oxide or potassium carbonate, or with non-volatile acids such as phosphoric and boric acids, or they may be subjected to the simultaneous or successive action of more than one of these reagents. Specifications 277/12, 3873/12, and 13,051/12 are referred to.
