Spring operation and control.-In spring-controlled points for tramways of the kind in which the spring is mounted upon a spindle attached to the point tongue, washers are mounted upon and attachable to the spindle whereby the point may be converted to a ' push,' ' pull,' or ' movable ' point as desired. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the spindle 4 is adjustably connected to the point tongue 2 and fitted with one or more compression springs 17, fixed pins 13, 14, and loose washers 15, 16. When the point is required to work as a ' push ' point, the washer 15 is made to engage the stops 18 and the washer 16 is moved until its groove 22 engages the pin 14. To work as a ' pull ' point, the washer 15 is moved to engage the pin 13 and the washer 16 made to engage the stops 19. When either of these conditions hold, the spring-pressed member 10 is retracted or the member 8 reversed so that the recess therein engages the member 10. To convert the point to a ' movable ' point, the washers are held against the stops 18, 20 by a spring, the spindle being free to move through the washers and spring and the end 9 of the member 8 arranged to engage the member 10. In a modified arrangement one or both of the washers are adapted to be fixed to the spindle according as the point tongue is to be held in one position only or movable to both extreme positions.
