Abstract
117,577. Bernardi, N. M. Aug. 13, 1917. Addition to 111,091. Sliding-jaw wrenches.- Consists in various modifications of the wrench described in the parent Specification in which the sliding jaw is locked to the shank of the fixed jaw by one or more wedges which are driven in between the sliding jaw and the shank and are connected to the shank by an operating screw. In one form, Fig. 1, the sliding jaw 4 is locked to the shank 5 of the fixed jaw 1 by two wedges 13, 14 forming the ends of a fork 12, the lower end 17 of which loosely embraces a sleeve 16 screwed on the threaded end 3 of the shank 5. A collar 15 secured to the sleeve prevents relative longitudinal movement of the fork and sleeve and serves to turn the sleeve so as to operate the wedges. The jaw 4 is positively adjusted by a worm 9 carried by the side plate 10 of the wrench and engaging a rack 7 connected to the jaw 4 by a pin 8 and mounted in a groove 6 in the shank 5. In another form, Fig. 4, the wedges 13, 14 form part of or are carried by a casing 18 operated by a sleeve 16 and collar 23. The wedges 13, 14 may be pivoted to the casing 18. A spring 24 arranged between the jaw 4 and shank 5 prevents uncontrolled movement of the jaw. The shank 5 may be of circular section and the wedges shaped accordingly. In the form shown in Fig. 14, the shank 2 is of circular section and a conical wedge 30 preferably split into four sections 31, 32, 33, 34, Fig. 17, to render it resilient, is employed. The wedge is carried by a screwed sleeve 28 operated by a screwed sleeve 35 rotatable on the shank 2. The sliding jaw 40 is provided with a part 41 having a projection 27 which slides in a guidegroove 29 in the shank 2 and a spring 42 is provided. In other forms employing a circular shank, the casing carrying the wedges is screwed directly to the shank and a spring attached to the sliding jaw carries a block engaging the shank to prevent uncontrolled sliding movement of the jaw.
