Abstract
12,864. Norman, T. W., and Delaney, R. May 31. Machines for making.-Flyer-mechanism for machines for making smooth clean rope, twine, or other products is provided with means for giving an excess twist to the entering sliver, and means within the flyer for untwisting and retwisting the rope &c. and winding it upon a spool. Fig. 1 shows flyer-mechanism in which the sliver delivered from the combing-machine and nippers passes through a primary whirl B comprising a pair of rolls 101, 102 on a pulley 103, which is independently rotated at a greater speed than the main flyer in the same direction, for instance at twice the speed of the main flyer. A twist in excess of the normal is thus given to the sliver between the whirl B and the nipper to prevent it from breaking, but this excess twist comes out of the sliver as it leaves the whirl B. Connected main flyer-heads 6, 7 mounted on tubular shafts 4, 5 carry guide-rolls 50, 51, 52, 53, and are rotated by a belt-pulley 9. A cradle 12 mounted on the shafts 4, 5 within the main flyer comprises end arms connected by rods 15, and is maintained stationary by planet gearing 16, 17, 18, 19. A spool 22 carried by a spindle 23 supported at one end by a spring arm 24 is rotated through friction disks 32, 35 mounted on the cradle, one 35 of which is formed as an internal gear and is driven by gearing 36, 37 from the shaft 5. The disks permit the speed of the spool to decrease as the diameter of the rope &c. on the spool increases. A guide 41 is traversed by a reverse screw-shaft 42 on the cradle, the shaft being driven by worm and bevel gearing 43, 44 from the gear 36. Au auxiliary flyer A, Figs. 1 and 7, journaled in the shaft 4 and a bracket 63 on the cradle is rotated through gearing 66, 67, 69, 70 at a greater speed than the main flyer in the same direction, for instance at twice the speed of the main flyer, and thus first untwists the sliver until its fibres are brought parallel and then remakes the rope &c. by giving it a further twist. A grooved member 64 and a sheave 65 provided with a central blade 71 give a sinuous form to the sliver and divide it as it passes, the twist afterwards given to the sliver having a tendency to pass into the separate divisions thereof. The re-made rope &c. passes to a pulldown mechanism comprising a pair of grooved capstans 90, Figs. 1 and 5, which are carried by the cradle and are each rotated by gearing 93, 94 from a pinion 95 on the shaft 68 carrying the auxiliary flyer gears 67, 70. Segmental slots 110 in the supporting-bracket enable the gears 94 to be adjusted to various sizes of the gears 93.
