Abstract

16,375. Finlay, W. July 8. Machines for making.-Relates to a machine of the type in which the forming of the strands and the laying thereof into cable or rope are accomplished in one continuous operation. T h e threads, drawn from bobbins 23, Figs. 1 and 2, journaled on spindles 22 in a fixed rack B, pass over guide pulleys 24 in the rack and over positively driven capstan rollers 25, and are twisted into strands in the heads D, from which the strands pass to the laying-device E, and, after passing over driven capstan rollers 61, 62, the rope is wound up on a reel C. The bobbins 23 are coupled to flanges 23<a> on the spindles 22, and are dragged by levers 26, which bear on the flanges 23<a> and are controlled by cams 30, which bear against springs arranged in the levers, and are carried by rock-shafts 29, which also carry fingers 28. The fingers 28 bear on the thread on the bobbins, and, as thread is unwound, the fingers drop and the cams diminish the tension of the springs and so reduce the drag. The twisting-heads D correspond in number to the bobbins, and each consists of a body 9, Fig. 6, journaled in a fixed bracket 8 parallel to the axes of the machine, and are all driven in the same direction from a driving-shaft 1 by gearwheels 7, 12. Each body 9 has a central chamber 13, in which is journaled a pulley 17 on an axis at right-angles to, and cutting the axis of, the body. The threads pass through a nipple 16, and over the pulley 17 to form the strands, which pass to the laying-device E. The laying. device or " combined head and tube carrier " E consist of a conical head 50, Fig. 2, fixed to the frame by a bar 51 and having converging guide passages 53, through which the strands pass to the spirally grooved tube 54 removably fixed in a box 55 on the carrier 56. The carrier 56 rotates in the frame and around the rope for twisting the strands together, and is driven by gears 58, 59, 60 from a secondary shaft 39 driven from the shaft 1 by gears 38. The capstan rollers 25 are mounted on shafts 32, 33 driven as shown from a cross-shaft 42 rotated by bevel-gearing from the shaft 39; and the capstan rollers 61, 62 are mounted on shafts 63, 64 driven as shown from a shaft 70 rotated by bevel-gearing from the shaft 39. The winding-up reel C only rotates on its own axis, and is driven from the capstan shaft 63.
