Abstract
10,942. Ottino, G. P. May 8. [Cognate Application, 15,168/12.] Rope grips; spring and weight actuated lowering-apparatus. - Relates to frictional apparatus for allowing a regulated descent down a vertical anchored rope, and is applicable for saving life from fire or at sea and for lowering goods from warehouses. In one form shown in Fig. 1, the load is suspended from the lower cross-bar b of a toggle-link frame, the upper pair of links carrying pivoted brake blocks h. The initial grip is given by a spring j, and when in use the weight of the load applies the grip. The runner may be returned to the top of the rope c by pulling a cord e. In a modified form shown in Fig. 4, the rope c passes between brake blocks t, u pivoted in a casing k on pins v, w respectively which lie slightly out of the vertical line. The person using the appliance, who is suspended from the hook a, may adjust the inclination of the jaws, and consequently the speed of descent, by pulling one or other of the handles m, n which are differently coloured or are labelled ' slow ' and ' fast.' Shields o free to rotate protect the hands. The appliance is returned to the top of the rope by means of coiled springs which are tensioned during descent by spring-pressed wheels 4 running on the rope c and geared to the springs.
