Abstract
20,849. Wray, J. H., and Watson, A. A. Sept. 11. Brakes for ropes. - A reversible runner for lowering persons on ropes from burning buildings comprises a casing fitted with handles and hand brakes 29 at each end. The rope is fixed at its upper end a n d passes round pulleys mounted in the casing, comprising fixed pulleys 8, 10 and a movable pulley 12, which is normally jammed against the fixed pulleys by the tension in the rope, but which may be separated therefrom by the cam lever 17 to al'ow the casing to run down. The person is carried by a sling suspended from the roller 22 which bears on the rope and acts as an additional brake. When one person has descended, the ends of the rope are reversed for the next descent.
