6722. Barrows, J. E. March 19. Shearing-instruments.-A pruning-tool or like shearing - instrument of the kind having a slidingly mounted blade actuated by toggle mechanism comprises a detachable blade 3 sliding in a handle consisting of plates 1 suitably spaced by shouldered rivets 2 and a backing piece 6 and is attached to two flat bars 12 by screws 13 as described in Specification 4924/12. The toggle mechanism consists of the links 10, 11 and the handles 7, the handles being pivoted in slots 9 in the plates, or the links may be attached to slots in the handles. Springs 14<a> are housed in the handle and adapted to open the tool. The handles may be locked when closed by a catch, as described in Specification 23,344/12, comprising a bell-crank lever 16 on one handle, a notch 17 of which engages a hole in a T-shaped projection on the other handle. One arm of the lever 16 projects beyond the handle, and by pressing on this, the catch is released and the tool allowed to open. The recess 4 is shaped as shown to hold the articles to be cut and the cutting-edge of the blade is inclined. The handles may be lengthened for use by both hands, or only one set of links and one handle may be provided if desired.
