Abstract

6187. Leduc, L. A. J. May 8, 1911, [Convention date]. Sunken ships, raising.-For salvage purposes, submarine vessels are fitted with conical buoys 2, which tightly close the ends of tubes 1 formed in the hull and following its contour. In this system of tubes, a vacuum is normally maintained, but can be destroyed from the inside of the vessel through openings 3; or the floats 2 may be released by a mechanical arrangement, such as withdrawing a piston-rod through the eye of the float. On each of the floats is wound a coil of wire, the coils of each pair being connected through the corresponding tube, so that, in the event of disaster, the floats may be released from inside the ship, thus serving both to indicate its position and to facilitate the passage of chains under the hull.
