5549. Rayner, G. March 5. Fluid-actuated gears.-The valve b has three heads forming two recesses c, c<1> which alternately put the cylinder ports d, d<1> into communication with an admission port a and exhaust ports k, k<1>, and is provided with locking- means consisting of loose plungers or balls i, i<1> working in cylinders formed in the ends of the valve or valve-chest. The auxiliary cylinders communicate with the recesses c, c' by means of passages g, g<1> formed in the valve or valvechest. The ends of the valve-chest communicate with the exhaust passages k, k<1> by passages l, l<1>, and with the cylinder by passages m', m. In the position shown, the valve is locked by the fluid admitted to the cylinder i by passages g. The main inlet and exhaust may be arranged at the top of the valve box, or may be provided in duplicate, one on each side of the box, enabling the pipes to be attached where desired, the unused parts being plugged.
