Abstract

19,841. Holman, J. M., and Holman, J. L. Sept. 2. Percussive drills.-In a drilling-engine with a fluid-operated feeding-device, and controlling- means for the fluid comprising a manuallyoperable valve controlling the admission of fluid to the feeding-device and to the drill cylinder and an independent valve for relieving the pressure in the feeding-device, the drill cylinder and the feeding-device are in alinement, and the controlling-means are arranged at their junction. As shown in a hammer drill, the fluid supply passes through a port E' into a valve D and thence into the feed-cylinder and the valvechest F respectively through ports D', D<2>, in which it is throttled; normally the fluid supply may also be connected to the feed-cylinder and the valve-chest through a valve E and ports E<2>. E<1>. To relieve the pressure in the feedcylinder, the valve E is adjusted so as to open the feed-cylinder to the atmosphere through ports E<2>, E<4>. A second relief valve may also be provided for the feed-cylinder. The piston is intermittingly rotated by a rifle-bar and ratchet mechanism, and communicates the rota. tion to the drill steel through a grooved pistonextension engaging the chuck. The Provisional Specification states that the pressure in the feed-cylinder may be relieved by means of a valve-controlled conduit between the supplyvalve, or the feed-cylinder, and the drill cylinder.
