Abstract
5065. Hobson, F., and Fletcher, J. Feb. 29. Bottles, washing.-Bottle-washing machines, of the kind in which the bottles, mounted in pivoted holders radiating from a soaking-wheel, are carried through a tank fitted with external brushes and at one point during the revolution are entered by internal brushes, are fitted with internal brushes which are mounted outside the tank and inserted into and withdrawn from each bottle in turn without arresting the rotary movement of the wheel; also the tank is fitted with oscillating brushes for cleaning the exterior of the bottles. Fig. 1 shows one construction of machine in which the bottles are inserted singly in holders pivoted on each end of the shafts e so that their necks point towards the axis of the wheel. They are retained in this position while passing the oscillating brushes i by means of cams on the shafts e engaging a fixed ring h. The external brushes are oscillated by means of a crank and connecting-rod m from the main driving-shaft, and rotate the bottles in the holders while in engagement therewith. After passing through the tank, the bottle-holders are rotated by means of a stop 5 until their mouths are in line with rotary internal brushes, which are spring- mounted on a pivoted frame o and are normally held by the spring 8 with their stems in a direction tangential to the adjacent portion of the ring h. The continued movement of the wheel then turns the brush frame about its pivot and first pushes the bottles on to the brushes and afterwards withdraws them again. When the bottles have been released from the brushes, the frame is restored to its original position to receive the next pair of bottles while the released bottles are turned again so that their necks point inwards by a second stop 5 and are then carried over rinsing nozzles 3. At the common delivery and feed point, two additional stops 5 are fitted, by means of which the bottles are presented neck outwards for delivery and the empty holders are then reversed to receive the new bottles. In the modified apparatus shown in Fig. 3, the ring h is fitted in the tank and in proximity to the rinsing-nozzles, but during the remaining portion of the revolution, the bottles hang freely with their mouths downwards. The ring h ends before the brushing station is reached, and the bottle-holders are received by side members h<1> which permit them to fall by gravity into the position in which the bottles are in line with the brush spindles. The pivoted frame carrying the internal brushes is supported by pivoted rods 11, which are weighted at their lower ends. The frame is oscillated about its pivot to raise and depress the brushes by mechanism actuated by the cam 22, and at the same time is moved to and from the wheel to advance and withdraw the brushes by mechanism actuated by a second cam 17.
