Abstract
4002. Smith, R. H., Camp, T. L., and Durant, E. M. Feb. 17. Carding-engines.-The main cylinder 1 is stripped by a roller 15 which is alternately in engagement with the cylinder 1 and with a scavenging - roller 31 which takes the fibre stripped from the cylinder and transfers it to the licker-in 32. When in engagement with the cylinder 1 the stripping- roller is driven in the same direction and at a greater surface speed than the cylinder by friction disks 7, 25, and when in engagement with the roller 31 it is driven at a slow speed in the reverse direction by friction disks 12, 25, the disks 7, 12 being driven as shown. The ends of the shaft 14 of the stripping-roller are disposed in slots 13 in the engine frame, and are connected by adjustable rods 16 with eccentrics 17 on a shaft 18, on which is loosely mounted a wheel 19 gearing with a wheel 20 driven from the roller 21. The wheel 19 has a concentric slot 22 engaging with a pin 22<1> on a weighted arm 23, 24 fixed to the shaft 18; a frame 27 fixed to the shaft 18 between the side frames of the engine has segmental guides between which is pivoted a weighted arm 28. As the wheel 19 is driven, the arm 23 and shaft 18 are moved by the pin 22<1> and the stripping-roller is moved into engagement with the cylinder 1 until the weight 28 is carried over the centre of the shaft 18 when it falls and, contacting with the pin 30 on the frame 27, rapidly turns the shaft to withdraw the stripping - roller from the cylinder 1 and bring it into engagement with the scavenging- roller. The clothing on the stripping-roller consists of blocks of teeth with intermediate blank spaces spirally arranged.
