Abstract
3311. Nolan, F. A. Feb. 13, 1911, [Convention date]. Protectors, securing.-A detachable rubber heel or protector D is formed with an undercut recess 20, Figs. 1 and 5, to receive a fastening-plate E, which is stamped from sheet metal and bent to the form shown in Fig. 3. The undercut portion of the protector is shaped to fill the spaces between the scalloped flanges 11, 12 of the plate E, so as to form strengthening-ribs 21, Fig. 5. To attach the protector, the plate is assembled in the recess 20, which is located well forward towards the breast, Fig. 1, and the protector is then correctly positioned on the heel. A slight tap then causes marking- points 10 on the plate to indent the heel, after which the plate is removed from the recess 20 and secured to the heel by nails. Finally, the protector is sprung over the flanges 11, 12. A suction recess 23, Fig. 1, is provided towards the rear of the protector. In a modified construction, the fastening-plate is formed by casting or drop forging, and is of the section shown in Fig. 8.
