To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL Gr. $1rarmo, a citizen of the United States, residlng at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Heels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to heels for shoes, and more particularly to an improved construction of so-called high heels for womens shoes.

It is an object of the invention to provide a simple, practical and durable heel of the character referred to which comprises a hol-' low metal body and a non-metallic plug inserted and anchored therein, the lower portion of which plug forms the tread portion of the heel, thereby avoiding the use of a separate lift or tread portion.

A further object is to provide an improved metal heel capable of economical manufacture and efiicient service.

Another object is to provide a heel of the character mentioned which possesses features of structural superiority and functional advantage.

Other objects and advantages will be in part noted hereinafter in connection with the following description of the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side proved heel mounted;

Fig. 2 is a similar view of the heel, partially in section, showing its construction and parts;

Fig. 3 is a top view of an inner plug of this heel; and

Fig. 4 is a side view thereof.

Fig. 5 is a bottom view thereof.

In general, the heel comprises a metal body part 1 hollow from top to bottom, and a plug 2 of leather, rubber or composition inserted into and anchored in the heel and having its lower portion flanged so as to fit against the bottom portion of the metal heel and to form a tread.

3 of uniform thickness, namely, without abrupt inner shoulders, and shaped as desired, for example, in the French and Cuban styles. At the top, the heel may have fastening elements such as pointed nails 4 whereby the heel is attachable to a shoe bottom, and the fastening elements may be cast in position or otherwise secured. The walls 4 also are tapered or constricted at a medial point, more or less similar to the narrow part of an hour glass, to afford spaces of larger diameter above and below a connecting space of smaller diameter. My above mentioned application N 0. 321,084 provided a tread or lift of leather to be attached to the plug which was inserted in the hollow heel as just described.

y present invention does away with the necessity for a separate tread portion, which is liable to be displaced, by extending the plug 2 itself below the metal heel portion and forming a tread portion 5 from the material of the plug itself, which is an integral part of the said plug. A flange 6 is formed for this purpose in the bottom portion of the plug which flange rests against the lower extremities of the walls 3 and is so shaped as to conform therewith. Thus the plug and tread are one piece and the necessity of a separate tread portion which is nailed into the plug and which is liable to be displaced in use is eliminated. I find it desirable to insert in the bottom or tread portion of the non-metallic plug 2 a metal wedge or disk 7 which assists in preventing the tread portion from wearing down. The plug is anchored against displacement in the manner described in my previous application No. 321,084.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a metal heel having an opening therethrough, said opening being constricted intermediate its length; a plug of yieldable material to fit within said opening and extend through the constricted part of the latter; means independent of the latter to secure said plug, a flange integral with said plug adapted to rest against the bottom portion of said metallic heel body and an integral portion of said plug below said metallic heel body shaped to form a tread.

2. In combination, a hollow metallic heel body having an opening therethrough from the plug and a metal disk inserted in the 10 top to bottom, said opening being constriot bottom of the tread portion of the plug.
