Liquid raised up to solid.-An acetylene and like gas generator consists of a tank 3 with a gas-washing chamber 4 below, a holder 11 for supporting cakes of carbide &c., a gas bell 8 having a contracted part enclosing the cakes and a lower enlarged part 9, and a pipe 7 extending upwards into the bell, the lower end dipping in water in the washing-chamber. The cakes are held tightly in the holder 11 so that the parts do not fall if the cakes disintegrate and by making the contracted part of the gasbell of substantially the same diameter as the holder, there is but little space for the splashing or surging of the water. The cakes are shaped to accommodate the pipe 7, which acts as a guide for them. Gas passes away through a pipe 21 with a branch 23 to a vessel 25, which acts as a safety-valve for relief of excess pressure. A cock 22 allows gas at starting to pass directly to the pine 24.
