Abstract

2408. Babcock & Wilcox, [Brown, C. W.]. Jan. 30. Pneumatic conveyers.-The objects are to reduce the wear of the piping through which such materials as dust and ashes are conveyed, and also to reduce the noise of the operation. The apparatus comprises, as shown in Fig. 1, piping b into which the material to be conveyed is delivered, a separator h, and an air-suction apparatus e. According to the invention, intermediate portions q or r of the piping bare formed with the bore contracted, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereby the cross-sectional area of the flowing volume of conveyed material is reduced and the air is thereafter permitted to expand, so as to act as a cushion between the material and the piping. The pipe section q may be chilled castings. After passing the blower e, the air enters a receiver p before it is finally discharged. The receiver p is larger in cross-section than the air-pipe so that it acts as a silencer.
