Abstract

297. Wall, A. W. Jan. 4. [Cognate Application, 12,406/12.) Driving-gear; engines with main shaft parallel to axis of cylinder; revolving - cylinder and reciprocating-piston type.-In an engine with a single cylinder 1, or with several cylinders 1<a>, co-axial with or parallel to the axis about which they revolve, and in which the ordinary crank mechanism is used, a single port 22 in each cylinder alternately coincides with inlet and exhaust ports 7, 9 in a surrounding cylindrical stationary part 6<a>. Uncut rings 10 may be arranged in grooves concentric with the cylinder ports. In the case of a single crank-shaft, it is geared through a shaft 15 and bevel and spur gearing with a fixed wheel 17, while in the case of several crank - shafts they gear directly with a fixed wheel 21 and, if desired, with a loose wheel 19. The wheel 19 may be fixed to a shaft 20, from which the power may be taken instead of from the crank case and at double the speed of the crank case. The wheels 17, 21 may be adjustable for regulating purposes, and there may be two sets of cylinders, the pistons in co-axial cylinders working on to the same crank.
