Abstract

191,159. Smith, R. T. Oct. 6, 1921. Regulating transformers.-A variable coupling- device comprises single-handed windings around a closed or polygonal frame which is collapsable and expansible to vary the cross-sectional area cf each convolution. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the two ends of the frame comprise flat bars 9 arranged as a four-sided structure with adjacent ends pivoted together. The end structures are connected by parallel rods 11, coaxial with the corner pivots 10, and the wire 12 is wound around the frame so formed. Grooves may be provided in the rods to prevent displacement of the wire, or if insulated, adjacent convolutions may be allowed to touch. To prevent substantial variation in the tension of the wire when thestructure is expanded or collapsed, the rods 11 are made of circular section; further, one or more rods may be resiliently mounted or on a movable eccentric, or the rods may be of elliptical or similar section. The frame may be mounted upon a stand 13, Fig. 6, with vertical limbs slotted at 16 to receive the ends of a rod, and provided with clamping means 14 to secure it in any desired position. A graduated scale 15 is also provided. In a modification, the frame consists of flat boards pivoted together at adjacent edges.
