Abstract

Nov. 1 Pyrometers.-Consists of an acoustic pyrometer comprising a pipe of fixed length adapted to be placed in the furnace, and a pipe of adjustable length which remains outside the furnace, both pipes being sounded by air &c. forced into them. The pipe b of fixed length and the adjustable pipe a may be connected to the ends of a tube c. into which air is blown through a nipple d. The tube c is surrounded by a tube h provided with a nipple i, to which is attached a tube adapted to convey the sounds of the pipes to the ears of the operator. The length of the pipe a is adjusted to give the same note as the pipe b by means of a piston e operated by a screwspindle f and a nut g, the spindle f working in conjunction with a suitable scale. The pipes a, b, instead of being connected to a common tube c, may be connected to separate tubes for the introduction of air. A number of pipes of different fixed lengths may replace the pipe a of adjustable length.
