Abstract

22,711. Kanter, G. Oct. 14. Pneumatic springs.-Relates to pneumatic shock-absorbing devices for vehicles, of the kind that are inserted between the vehicle body and the wheel axles, and consists in providing two concentric cylinders on the wheel axle, a movable cover on the outer cylinder connected with the vehicle body, and a movable cover on the inner cylinder, air being pumped into the inner cylinder and escaping through a valve into the outer cylinder. Fig. 1 shows a cross-section through the axle 19, to which are connected the cylinders 3, 5, having movable covers 11, 8, the cover 11 being connected with the vehicle body by a pin 12. Springs 41, 43 are provided to support the outer and inner covers when the pressure falls. Air is pumped into the inner cylinder, through a valve 17, until a predetermined pressure is reached, whereupon air escapes into the outer cylinder through passages 6 and valves 7. When the pressure in the outer cylinder exceeds a certain amount, either through over supply or due to a shock, air escapes by valves 45 and may be stored for use on the vehicle. A lubricator 14 is provided, the outer cylinder being served by a channel 16 and the inner cylinder by a passage 15 and cup 10. Specification 22,697/11, [Class 144 (i), Wheels &c.], is referred to.
