Abstract
20,879. Underhill, F. W., and Perham, A. L. Sept. 21. Targets.-Relates to mechanism for causing a target to appear and disappear automatically and repeatedly at intervals. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the target a is mounted on a spindle b carrying a lever arm c, which is connected by a rod d to a piston c working in a cylinder f provided with a supply and exhallst valve h. controlled - by tappets i, k on a pistonrod r, which works in a dash-pot o and is connected by a divided spring rod l, m with the lever c. The dash-pot is fitted with adjustable escape valves p and non-return valves q. In one modification, the target is operated by a crank disk driven by a coiled spring, motor, &c. and controlled by a sliding escapement rod actuated by the tappets. In another arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the crank disk s is provided with two tappets V, W which act on pins X, Z of different lengths on opposite arms of a pivoted escapement t, and can be adjusted circumferentially to regulate the relative time of appearance and disappearance of the target. The periodic time of a complete up-and-down movement of the target is varied by adjusting the speed of the operating-gear. A small battery may be used as the source of power by storing up the energy in a raised weight or wound spring during the period the target is at rest.
