Abstract

1,118,407. Diaphragm vibrators. MATTEL Inc. 15 Nov., 1965 [12 April, 1965], No. 48387/65. Heading G5J. A sound production device comprises a resonator adapted to emit sounds when subjected to repetitive shock excitation by a rotary member and an arrangement whereby there sonator is selectively able to simulate either sounds similar to those produced by an I.C. engine or sounds similar to those of a siren, a manually reciprocable crank and a transmission system operative between the rotary member and the crank to convert the reciprocatory motion of the crank into continuous rotation of the rotary member. The device is for use in particular in toy vehicles. As shown, a cylindrical member 128 of a tone arm 110 has a ball 132 at one end which engages in a series of radial grooves cut in one side of a geared rotatable wheel 16 and the other end communicates with a piston 102 of a resonator 10. The piston is biased towards the tone arm by a spring 112 attached to a pin 116 extending from a spider 120 of the resonator. By operating a handle 144 the ball 132 may be moved to different radial positions on the wheel 16 corresponding to different series of grooves to alter the pitch of the sounds produced. By stroking a hand-operated crank 30 the wheel 16 is driven through a cluster gear arrangement that only co-operates with the small gear on the wheel 16 mounted on the opposite side to the grooves when the crank is operated in one direction. The peripheral gearing 80 on the wheel 16 engages a small gear wheel 72 of a friction clutch 70 having a series of flexible arms 74 that ride over projections 76 on the inside of a flywheel 24 until one of the arms engages a projection and the flywheel rotates with the friction clutch. Thus when the stroking of the crank has ceased the energy stored in the flywheel is sufficient to operate the device for some time afterwards. The specification gives specific examples and a general indication of the criteria to consider when selecting a material suitable for forming the resonator to give the desired sounds.
