L. E. coway. DIAPHRAGM WARNING HORN APPLICATION FILED DEC.6.1920.

DIAPHRAGM VIARNING HORN.
L HLGAQEZ.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May re, 1922.
Application filed December 6, 1920. Serial No. 428,669.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD EUGENE CownY, subject of the King of Great Britain residin at Archer WorkaStation Avenue, Kew Gardens, in the county of Surrey, England have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Diaphragm lVarning Horns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sound warning devices, such as motor vehicle horns, of the type in which a diaphragm is vibrated by means or a rotary member carrying striking elements meeting a stud on the diaphragm.
According to 'this invention the striking elements are in the form of thick discs or rollers mounted in the rotary member in such a; manner as to have limited radial freedom in the plane oi the discs, each striking element as the member is rotated, striking the diaphragm stud. In a suitable construction embodying this invention the discs or rollers are provided with bosses or short axles extending into radial or sloping slots in a pair of carrier plates between which the rollers lie so as to project at the edge when the axles are in the outer ends of their slots.
in order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical section through a horn embodying this invention, and
Figure 2 shows in plane the improved striker.
The general construction of the horn illus trated is on the lines described in the specification of my Patent No. 142274, but the method of rotating the striker disc may be modified in any convenient manner.
A is the body of the horn provided at the front with a mouthpiece a. Behind the mouthpiece is a diaphragm B, having a striking stud Z) mounted on its inner face at the centre by means of a nut b. C is the wheel carrying the striking rollers D and mounted upon the hollow spindle 0. E is the striking cap fitted to slide upon the upper end of the body A and to compress the spring 6 when struck or pressed, the spring returning the cap to normal position on release. pitch working in the rotatable nut which is supported by a ball thrust bearing f in the casing A and provided with clutch teeth 7 which are adapted to engage with corresponding teeth 0 on the upper end of the hollow spindle c which is rotatably supported between the ball bearings 0 0 The wheel C comprises the two discs 0 each provided with a set of short radial slots 0 and the rollers D lie between the two discs which are separated by the internally screwed sleeve 0 which screws upon the hollow spindle c. The rollers are provided with the bosses or short axles (Z which project into the slots 0 so that the rollers are free to move inwardly or outwardly. To keep the rollers securely in the outermost position and prevent shaking a light circular spring plate d is provided which as shown more clearly in Figure 2, lies inside the rollers and presses them outwardly. The spring plate is preferably slightly bent at the ends which are caused to overlap.
The method of operating the horn is as described in the prior specification No. 141-2274- already referred to, the downward pressure of the cap E against the spring 6 causing the screw F to move down with the cap, the lower end oi the screw being guided in the hollow spindle c. The further movement carries down the clutch f which immediately engages the upper end of the hollow spindle 0 through the clutch teeth, the movement causing rotation of the nut (the downward movement of which is stopped) and consequently the rotation of the striking wheel. The rollers D as they pass the striking stud b are pressed slightly back by the stud as shown in Figure 2 and give a blow to the stud which varies according to the speed at which the striking cap E is caused to descend.
.VV hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a sound warning device oi? the diaphragm and rotating striker type, a rotary striker wheel comprising a pair of spaced plates having formed therein concentric rings of short radial slots facing each other and a series of relatively thick discs each having a short projecting axle extending into opposite radial slots in the said plates,
F is an operating screw of large.
and means for rotating said Wheel and causing the aforesaid discs to act upon the diaphragm successively.
2. In a sound warning device of the diaphragm and rotating striker type, a rotary striker wheel comprising a series 01 striker discs, :i carrier in which the said discs are mounted so as to have a limited radial movement, and an annular spring extending substantially concentric with the axis of the wheel and bearing on the inner side of all the striking discs to press them radially outward.
