Description

H. O. CLARK,
VEHICLE WHEEL.
APPLIGATIONIILED JULY 15. 1908.
' 941,976. Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
UNITED STATES HORACE O. CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that I, HORACE O. C ARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Vehicle-lVheel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle wheels of that type utilizing springs for the purpose of taking up vibrations and it 18 more particularly an improvement upon thewheel describcd aud claimed by me in an applicae tion filed Mar. 23, 1907, Serial No. 364,176.
The object of the invention is to provide a wheel having a 'series'of elastic spokes arranged in a novel manner for-the purpose of absorbing a ll vibrations resulting from the movement of the wheel over an uneven surface.
With this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a portion of a wheel embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through a portion of one of the outer spokes and its holding means. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through a portion of a wheel, said section being taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Referring tothe figures by characters of 7 reference, 1 designates a hub having annular bearing against a segmental pressure foot 9 having a recess 10 therein into which the screw 8 projects although said screw does not engage the wall of the recess. A nut 11 is interposed between the pressure foot and the yoke and is engaged by the screw 8.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 15,
Patented N av. 30, 1909.
1908. Serial No. 443,711.
g This nut is of such size that it can not'rotate within the yoke and serves to feed the screw against the pressure foot. Each pressure foot 9 is designed to bear against the concave face of the arch or crown 12 of a V- shaped sp( ke 13 the terminals of which are bent outwardly substantially at right angles as shown at 14. One of these spokes is posi tioned between every two pins 5 within the rings 4; and the adjoining portions of the spokes extend along substantially parallel lines to the rim 15 of the wheel and the terminal portions 14 of the adjoining spokes extend toward each other and are designed 16 which extend through said terminal portions and through a holding plate 17 which laps them. After the spokes 13 have been secured to the rim 15 in the manner described the screws 8 can be rotated so as to feed through the nuts and against the pressure feet 9, thus forcing said feet against the arches of the spokes 13 and tightening said spokes. 'By' adjusting the screws in this manner the rings 1 can be properly centered within the rim 15.
The foregoing structure constitutes no 7 part of the present invention.
vibrations consists of two series of ogeecurved springs interposed between the rings 4 and the hub 1. The springs of one series, and which have been indicated by the numeral 18, have their end portions provided with eyes 19? which engage the pins 3 and 5 so that the line of pressure along the radius of the wheel will intersect the s ring in said radius at the center thereof, said springs being disposed at comparatively slight angles to the radii. The springs 19 constituting the other series are provided at theinends with eyes similar to those upon the springs 18 and are arranged at one side of the sprin s 1 8. These springs 19 are attached .at their ends to the pins 3 and 5 but the pins to which the ends of each spring are attached are not disposed in the same radius. Instead, each spring extends from its inner pin 3 to one of the in which said pin 3 is located. It will be seen therefore that the springs 19 have their intermediate portions arranged practically tangentially to the flanges 2 and almost at ri ht angles to the adjoining radii of the to be fastened to the rim by means of bolts.
The elastic means utilized for taking up w eel and obviously therefore these springsarranged upon the same radius of the wheel pins 5 adjoining the radius I intermediate rini, the points of connection of each-spring of one series being disposed on the same of connection of each spring of the other series bein disposed in different radii.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
