Abstract

20,486. Nõher, W., and M³ller, K. Sept. 29, 1910, [Convention date]. Hydrogen.-Water-gas free from nitrogen and rich in hydrogen is made by first firing and blasting the coke in a producer until the temperature rises to about 1000‹C., then closing the generator so that it can be evacuated, whereby the temperature falls to say 800‹ C., and then blowing in superheated steam. The water-gas, which in an example is stated to contain 60 per cent of hydrogen, 18 per cent of carbon monoxide, and 22 per cent of carbon dioxide, is washed, freed from dust, and, after the addition of more superheated steam, is passed over a contact-mass consisting of asbestos carrying rhodium or palladium, maintained at about 800‹ C. to convert the carbonic oxide into carbonic acid. After several passages over the contact mass, the product is freed from carbonic acid by any suitable means, for instance by lime, soda, or potash lye. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) mentions also the use as catalyst of any metal of the platinum group; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
