Cleaning clothes, fabrics, fibres, and the like.-Woollen, cotton, and other yarns are cleaned, dyed, and washed by passing them between upper and lower longitudinally corrugated rollers a, b, c, d, which rotate at the same peripheral speed, and are automatically reversed after having made a certain number of revolutions in either direction. A number of pairs of rollers are arranged on each side of the machine, those on one side being driven independently of those on the other side. Each of the upper rollers c, d is mounted on a bell-crank lever m, so that all of these rollers on either side may be raised or lowered by longitudinal adjustment of a rod i, each bell-crank lever being also adjustable independently. The fluid is discharged on to the yarn. by perforated pipes e, and tanks B are placed beneath the rollers. The automatic reversing gear for the rollers is shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The clutch member q is shifted by a lever s<1> with a weight s at its upper end, whenever the driven shaft has made a number of revolutions sufficient to bring the lever from either extreme position to its middle position, when it falls over and reverses the gear. This movement of the lever is brought about by a screw u, geared to the driven shaft, and giving a reciprocating motion to arms x that engage the lower end of the lever. The number of revolutions made in either direction before reversal may be varied by adjusting the distance between the arms x by means of the right- and left-handed screw y.
