Battens, strengthening. - Packing-cases for india-rubber or other material of a plastic nature are strengthened at the top and bottom by means of battens d, d<1>, which are readily removable to have the mouth of the case clear for the removal and repacking of the contents. In the construction shown, the ends of the battens are halved and rest upon vertical corner-pieces e inside the case. The lid or bottom b is secured by edge-clips c, the upper nails i of which may enter the part b only or may pass through into the battens. In modifications, the securing means for the battens consist of metal clips resting on the upper edges of the sides of the case, and the lower halved ends of the battens d rest on shoulders or recesses cut in the corners of two sides of the case.
