Actuating by compressed air.-In apparatus for raising liquids by compressed air, as soon as the liquid has been removed from the forcing- chamber, the air pressure is increased in order that it may move the regulating-valve into the discharge position. Fig. 3 shows one of a pair of forcing-chambers, and Fig. 2 the valve-gear. Water is admitted through the inlet valve b', Fig. 3, and discharged through the valve c<1>, and air is admitted by the passage l<1>. The regulating-valve comprises a slide valve h and piston i arranged in a common casing; the slide valve is connected to an air-compressor through the pipe a, and the exhaust pipe d is connected to the suction of the compressor. The ports e, e' are each connected to a forcing-chamber and are also connected by narrow ducts g, g' with the piston cylinder f. The slide valve and piston i are connected outside by means of links, and a weight l is provided to give quick movement to the valve. In the position shown, water will enter the chamber connected with the port e', while from the chamber or chambers connected with the port e the water will be forced until the leather or rubber band o<1> is forced upwards to its full extent, when the pressure in the air pipe rises. The compressed air then passes through the duct g, forcing down the piston i and reversing the slide valve. The liquid may be raised in stages by these means, the chambers being arranged at suitable intervals.
