Lighting burners &c. by frictional devices. - Relates to pyrophoric and like igniters of the kind in which a torch d carrying at its lower end a wick or the like f passes into a receptacle a containing an absorbent material b saturated with suitable fuel, and consists in providing means for automatically lighting the torch during its withdrawal from the reservoir. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the casing c surrounding the wick has on its outer surface a roughened strip j, and a piece of pyrophoric material k, which is attached to the reservoir and is normally held in disengaged position by the spring o, can be pressed into engagement with the strip j as the torch is withdrawn. Various modifications are described ; for instance the pyrophoric material may be attached to the torch so as to act on a pawl in the reservoir, or a piece of pyrophoric material supported in the reservoir may bear against a roughened wheel which is rotated by the withdrawal of the torch ; or a pawl mounted within the torch may rub against a pyrophoric surface within the reservoir.
