Abstract

Engines with two or more pistons reciprocating oppositely within the same cylinder.-A valve arrangement for steam and other fluidpressure engines comprises a central piston S, an annular co-axial piston E<1>, an external sleeve E<2>, and an intermediate sleeve S<1>, the sleeves serving as lift valves and seating on the cylinder head and the annular piston respectively. The external sleeve and the annular piston are provided with ports G<2>, G<3>, respectively, communicating by ports G' with the annular admission chamber G formed in a cap C<1>. An annular exhaust-chamber E is provided in the head of the cylinder, which has a cooling-chamber W. The central piston S and the annular piston E' are driven from a three-throw valve shaft by a connecting-rod S<2> and a pair of connecting- rods E<5> respectively. The valve sleeves are lifted by engagement with the pistons and closed by springs, in the form shown in Fig. 1, and by cams E‹, S<10>, against the action of springs, in the form shown in Fig. 10. The valve-shaft is driven from the main shaft by bevel-gearing.
