Wood, preserving.-Posts &c. are protected from decay by mixing the surrounding earth with a preservative such as petroleum or distillation products of wood, coal tar, petroleum, &c. The earth may be moulded in segments &c. or may be replaced by sand, gravel, dry clay, &c. mixed with the preservative.
