Joints.-In ball joints between the ribs and top-notch or wheel of umbrellas and parasols, the reduced curved ball ends of the ribs are made wider in one direction than the other, the wider parts lying parallel to the slits in the top-notch. Fig. 1 shows the ends a' of the ribs a made narrower than the ribs both horizontally and vertically, the curve being such that when the umbrella is open, the thrust of each rib is directed to a point higher than the ball end. The top-notch comprises an upper part c<1> and a lower part c<2> secured on the threaded stem of the upper part. Slits c<3> terminate in recesses d for the balls, which lie against the stick. The slits in the lower part c<2> allow the ribs to lie close against the stick when the umbrella is closed.
