11,940. Vickers, Ltd., and Imrie, J. May 17. Ammonium chloride free from sulphate is obtained from the water used for washing ammonium chloride and sulphate from producer and like gases, by treating this liquor, before or after concentration, with a chloride capable of yielding an insoluble sulphate, separating the precipitate and crystallizing out the salt. Washing is carried out in any suitable apparatus, and free ammonia which may be first taken up by the water is liberated by the heat of the gases. Baffles &c. are placed in the gas exit to stop spray, and the liquor may be withdrawn at this point, as it is in some cases richer in salts. Dust and tar are first separated, and the sulphate removed by the addition of, for example, calcium chloride, calcium sulphate being precipitated. The ammonium chloride obtained may be purified further by calcining, extracting the soluble portion, and recrystallizing.
