Abstract

131,870. L'Air Liquide Soc. Anon. pour l'Etude et l'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs G. Claude. Aug. 24, 1918, [Convention date]. Ammonium chloride; sodium bicarbonate. - Relates to a modification of the process for producing ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate from synthetic ammonia described in Specification 130,365. According to the invention, sodium chloride is added to the mother-liquor, obtained after separating out the sodium bicarbonate and containing mainly ammonium chloride, in such quantity that it remains dissolved during the subsequent operations, ammonia and carbon dioxide are passed in, and the solution is cooled to separate out ammonium chloride; the solution is then treated with sodium chloride and carbon dioxide to precipitate sodium bicarbonate; these operations are then repeated on the resulting mother-liquor to produce more ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. The ammonium chloride produced is heated to nearly 70‹ C. to destroy any alkalinity. The cooling of the solution to separate out the ammonium chloride may be effected by the evaporation of the liquid ammonia or of the liquid or solid carbon dioxide used in the process.
