Abstract

18,505. Feld, W. Aug 17. Purifying gas.-In the process for removing ammonia from gases, such as coal-gas and the like, by passing the gas through a solution of a salt of magnesium, a salt is added which prevents the precipitate of the salt of magnesium produced from becoming too thick. Suitable salts are the salts of the alkalies, alkaline earths, or ammonia, such as the chlorides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, or ammonium. It is also stated that it is convenient to use a salt of the same acid as the magnesium salt. As an example, the gases are passed through a solution of magnesium chloride to which ammonium chloride has been added for the above specified purpose. After nearly the whole of the magnesium chloride has been decomposed, the liquid is run into the distilling-apparatus. Carbonic acid, absorbed from the gases, distils first, ammonia being given off as the temperature rises. Specification No. 11,206, A.D. 1905, is referred to.
