Abstract

10,737. Lowman, J. May 3. Wood, treating with liquids; impregnating- compositions. -Relates to means for impregnating cork &c., particularly cut or bottle corks and cork disks. The corks with the impregnating-material, for instance, paraffin wax or a mixture of paraffin wax and resin, are inserted through a hinged door a in a wire drum A rigidly fixed to the end of a shaft B, and a steam or gas-heated annular jacket E is slid on its supporting-rails D<1> over the wire drum so as to be in contact with a fixed guard F. The wire drum A is then rotated by means of a pulley C on the shaft B, and is subjected to heat from a gas-burner G. After about 15 or 20 minutes, the heating jacket is moved clear of the drum, the rotation of the drum being continued until the corks cool. The corks and impregnating - material may be placed in the wire drum separately, or the impregnating- material may be applied to the cork before insertion by placing them in a wire cage and immersing it in molten paraffin wax floating on the top of boiling water. The vessel or wire drum containing the corks, instead of being rotated, may be jigged, rocked, or otherwise agitated, and in some cases may be arranged to slide into a fixed annular jacket or oven.
