Abstract

10,159. Crane, D. April 26. Measuring-tapes. - The free end is provided with a fixing attachment whereby the tape is adapted for convenient use by a single person. The device consists of a strongly magnetized U- shaped steel plate 2 pivoted to the end of a tape 1, and formed with an enlarged opening in which is mounted a ring 3 of diamagnetic material. This ring serves as a bearing for an awl or other tool adapted to hold the end of the tape in position when desired. Projecting at right-angles from the poles of the magnet 2 are prongs 4 provided with faces 4<a> which are adapted to engage the end of a beam or shaft the length of which is to be measured. The prongs are also pointed to enable them to be driven into wood-work and the like. When the tape is wound up in its case, as shown in Fig. 5, the prongs enter slots therein and the poles of the magnet rest against the steel armature 7.
