Abstract

1448759 Nails ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 6 Sept 1974 [6 Sept 1973 14 March 1974] 38985/74 Heading F2H [Also in Divisions E1-E2] A plastics nail 10 (Fig. 2) or 40 (Figs. 6, 7) for securing an earth wire to a wooden pole carrying power transmission lines comprises a head 18 or 43 and a rectangular section shank 12 or 42 which tapers from the head to a chisel point 16 or 44 and carries barbs 26 or 45 on two opposite faces, the barbs extending the full width of said faces, and the other two faces having recesses 28 or 46-48 therein to provide a resilient mounting for the barbs, and the head having a driving section (24) (Figs. 3-5, not shown) or 51 axially aligned with the shank, a hook section 18 or 50a to grip the wire, and a stop section 30 or 52, the hook and stop sections projecting transversely from the driving section, and the stop section providing a shoulder extending in the plane of the base of the shank. In Fig. 2, the stop section comprises shoulders 30 on opposite sides of the head. The head has a through-aperture 32. In Figs. 6, 7 the stop section 52 comprises a shoulder 52a supported by a web 52b, and the hook section 50a has its aperture closed by a thin web 50b and a thicker web 50c. When the nail is driven in to grip a cable or wire, part of the web 50b, and if the wire is thick enough, part of the web 50c also, is broken away to accommodate the wire (Fig. 9, not shown). The driving section 51 has weight-reducing recesses 51a-51c in two opposite sides.
