Starting. - A starting-device of the kind in which a piston - rod engaging the ground is driven out of a fixed cylinder by means of compressed gas generated for example by the explosion of gunpowder comprises a vessel having a small compartment c for a cartridge f, communicating by a restricted outlet d with a larger chamber b, which is connected by tubes n with the cylinder o fixed to the machine. The pistonrod q slides in the cylinder o controlled by the spring s and is provided with a shoe r having ridges t for engagement with the ground. The chamber b and the space provided by forming the pistonrod hollow serve to moderate the action of the compressed gas. The plug e closing the chamber c is secured bayonetjoint fashion by a series of inter-engaging segmental projections forming screw-threads on the two parts. When the plug is in position, an insulated pin thereon is brought into contact with a spring pin m on the vessel. This prevents the discharging - current from flowing before the plug is secured. The cartridge f is attached to the plug c by its flange, which engages a segmental slot on the plug. Benzine or the like in cartridges ignited electrically may be substituted for gunpowder.
