Abstract
7150. Pankhurst, V. H. March 22. Corrugating; bending dies and formers.-In a machine for corrugating tubes circumferentially by spinning, the tube is clamped on either side of the ring to be operated, and these clamps are forced together while a spinning-tool is pressing the metal inwards. A hollow mandrel a having a reduced extension a<1> is mounted between the centres of a lathe, and carries sliding sleeves j, l, o. The sleeve o carries spring-pressed arms p which are expanded to clamp the tube w by the cone sleeve l, which is operated by rotation of the nut u through the keys t, w and spindle m. The sleeve s screws on the sleeve o, and is adapted to clamp the turned-in edge w<1> of the tube w against the levers p. The tube w is clamped to the sleeve j by the ring x, and then, while the whole is rotated and a spinning-tool pressed at z, the sleeve j is fed to the right by rotation of the hand-wheel g. The depth of the corrugation is regulated by the flange y. The sleeve s is then removed, the clamp x loosened, the levers p closed together by turning the nut u and the sleeves j, o moved in turn to the left, the clamp x is then tightened, the levers p expanded, and the second corrugation made as shown in Fig. 1 (Provl.). The Provisional Specification describes also a spinning - tool which is used to form the corrugations, and consists of a chain of rollers tightened by hand-screws.
